Tēnā koutou,

Our Christchurch Pride Fest aims to bring together the LGBTQIA+ community of Ōtautahi, to showcase our vibrance and develop the connections with Greater Christchurch. Recently, we learned that the Sakinah Community Trust has an event planned at the Bridge of Remembrance focused around engaging in conversations with Muslims and help create understanding.  This event also marks the launch of Unity Week, which is about a collective “us”, cultivating a society where we all feel included, respected and that we belong – something we can relate to.

Through our discussions with the Sakinah Community Trust, concerns were raised about scheduling Christchurch Pride’s Walk For Support on a date of significance to Ōtautahi, and specifically the Muslim community that suffered through an horrendous attack. Upon reflection, we agree.

Because of this, we have decided to change the date of our Walk For Support to Thursday, March 14th, maintaining the starting time of 5:10 pm at the corner of Cashel & Colombo.

We understand that changing the date so close to the event is not ideal, but we urge everyone to respect the significance of this date. We appreciate everyone’s support in accommodating this change, recognising that plans may have been made around the original date.

Ngā mihi,
Tom & H
