The Wonder of Matariki: A Pride Kōrero

June 17 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm

This Christchurch Pride, Green MP Dr. Elizabeth Kerekere will lead a very special kōrero on the wonder and meaning of Matariki, inviting perspectives from a range of fabulous Takatāpui and Rainbow voices.
Panelists include:
💜 Jessica Niurangi MacLean (Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hine), Lecturer at Aotahi, UC
💜 Rihari Campbell-Collier (Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki, Te Whakatohea, Ngai Tai, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui), Youth MP for Dr. Elizabeth Kerekere
💜 Siobhan Tumai (she/her) (Waikato Tanui and Ireland), Takatāpui activist, Māmā, and community worker living in Ōtautahi.
For Māori, Matariki is about appreciating and connecting with te taiao, a reminder that our tīpuna used the stars to navigate ocean voyages, planted and harvested crops based on lunar cycles, and even knew when fish were spawning or travelling, based on the phases of the moon.
What other wonders does Matariki hold? What does it mean for Takatāpui and Rainbow people in Aotearoa? Does Matariki have a gender? Haere mai – come and celebrate Ōtautahi Pride – and Matariki – with us, and join the kōrero.
Hosted by Aotahi – School of Māori & Indigenous Studies at UC.
Please RSVP at https://action.greens.org.nz/the_wonder_of_matariki_pride…. For COVID safety reasons, numbers are limited and priority will be given to those who have RSVP’d. Please wear a mask and sign in for contact-tracing purposes. The event will also be recorded and/or live-streamed.
