SUMMARY:Queer Supper Club
DESCRIPTION:Queer Supper Club – our monthly dinner meet up for the Rainbow community is back for 2026! To kick off the season we will be starting with a Pride month dinner. Pizza trap (home of phenomenal pizza and the sweetest team of legends) is opening on a Monday especially for us! This one has a closing time of 9pm\, just because we’d like their team to get an early night (and so would I)\, but there are several nearby locations that are excellent for a post dinner drink should you wish to continue the party. \nPlease find the event link below and click attending if you will be there as this one may fill up very quickly!

SUMMARY:INTERSEXtionality: Disproportionate impacts of climate change and other social justice issues on queers
DESCRIPTION:How does climate change\, housing\, prisons\, and other social justice movements disproportionately impact the LGBQTI+ community?\nWhat social justice groups exist in Ōtautahi that are fighting these issues—and how can you get involved?\nCome along to this panel discussion to find out.\nWe’ll be joined by members from various social justice movements across Ōtautahi who are on the ground tackling these interconnected issues. They’ll share their insights on how LGBQTI+ rights are deeply connected to struggles like climate justice\, housing justice\, and prison abolition.\nFollowing the panel\, we’ll provide flyers with key questions we can ask politicians at the upcoming Queerly Political event—questions designed to find out how serious they really are about addressing LGBQTI+ rights. Because queer rights cannot exist without broader social justice.\nWe’ll share some kai together\, then head over to Queerly Political as a group. \n Event link: Queerly Political\n https://facebook.com/events/s/queerly-political/1630897084733349/ \n Want to speak at this event?\nWe’re looking for panellists! SUMMARY:Five Films For Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Join us for special screening of Five Films For Freedom\, the world’s widest reaching LGBTQIA+ online celebration. \nA partnership between the British Council and BFI Flare\, London’s LGBTIQIA+ film festival\, Five Films For Freedom makes five international LGBTQIA+ short films available to watch online for free anywhere in the world as well as free public screenings. \nSince its launch in 2015\, the films featured in the programme have been watched online and in person by over 26 million people in more than 202 countries and principalities\, celebrating global stories in support of LGBTQIA+ communities around the world. \nChristchurch Art Gallery is delighted to host this free public screening of the films in collaboration with Christchurch Pride and the British Council New Zealand and the Pacific. The films selected for this year’s programme will be announced in late February. \nThe Films\nOvernight\, the five films drawn from the BFI Flare Festival programme that will make up the 2026 Five Films For Freedom were announced. They are from Brazil\, France\, United Kingdom\, USA/Mexico and Vietnam. You can see the announcement here: Five Films For Freedom | British Council Arts\n\nThis year’s selection is:\n\nI HATE HELEN (Dir. Katie Lambert\, UK\, 7 min)\nPriya hates Helen. She hates her in the canteen. Hates her in science. Especially hates her at swimming. Mostly\, Priya hates the way Helen makes her feel. A short film about the tidal wave of gay lust some girls feel in school and letting those feelings just wash over you.\n\nIn the UK this film would be classed as a PG.\n\nRAG DOLLS (Dir. Amy Adler\, USA / Mexico\, 12 min)\nMarried couple Rosalinda (born with spina bifida) and Diana (who has cerebral palsy) navigate life in Puebla\, Mexico\, where disability intersects with discrimination and poverty. Abandoned by family\, underserved by government support systems\, and facing persistent homophobia\, the women have built a life centred on mutual care and protection. Observing a single ordinary day\, the film follows their routines\, a romantic date\, and moments of reflection on their enduring love.\n\nIn the UK this film would be classed as a U certificate.\n \nROOM 206 (Dir. Laurie Bisceglia\, 16 min\, France)\nAfter undergoing gender-affirming surgery\, Clair no longer cares what the world thinks. Reclaiming his body becomes a path toward self-recognition for the first time in his life. This documentary accompanies him not only through physical change\, but towards emotional renewal and a new beginning.\n\nIn the UK this film would be classed as a PG.\n \nSWEAT (Mô Hôi) (Dir. Edward Nguyen\, Vietnam\, 15 min)\nOn the eve of leaving rural Vietnam\, farm worker Hung prepares to illegally cross the border in search of refuge abroad. Defined by routine and labour\, his final day with Hoang\, a fellow worker\, reshapes his understanding of desire\, intimacy and selfhood.\n\nIn the UK this film would be classed as a U certificate.\n\nTHEO (Dir. Monica Palazzo & Joana Galvão\, Brazil\, 15 min)\nBrazil\, 1986. During the World Cup\, seven-year-old Theo quietly navigates school life while defying rigid gender expectations. Between silence and rebellion\, they begin inventing their own way of existing.\n\nIn the UK this film would be classed as a U certificate.\n \nScreenings\nWe are delighted that there will be 24 screenings across New Zealand\, and in Fiji\, in the following locations:\n\nCathay Cinema\, Kerikeri\nMatakana Cinemas\nAuckland University of Technology\, Auckland\nCapitol Cinema\, Auckland\nTe Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery\, Hamilton\nLuxe Cinemas\, Tauranga\nMTG\, Hawke’s Bay\, Napier\nGovett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre\, New Plymouth\nRoxy Cinema\, Wellington\nSpace Place\, Wellington\nNelson Provincial Museum\nRegent Theatre\, Hokitika\nChristchurch Art Gallery\nAigantighe Art Gallery\, Timaru\nTe Atamira\, Queenstown\nDunedin Public Art Gallery\nArts Murihiku\, Invercargill\nDamodar Cinemas\, Suva\, Fiji
